Personally, I like self-driving cars. I think they could solve a lot of issues. A shared car or set of cars with a group of families would dramatically lower the resource needs and costs.
I am cognizant of the issues of spying and shutting them off, but...
That is ALREADY an issue. It's not exclusive to self-driving cars. They can spy on you now, and they do. Cars have all sorts of ways to do that. Any new car could potentially be programmed to shut down based on an external controller at some shadowy bureaucracy. Self-driving has zero to do with that.
It's completely possible to make a self-driving car that is self-contained. It only gets info from outside, but cannot be reprogrammed or have its programming interfered with.
On the good side:
computers don't fall asleep,
they don't drink,
they don't get distracted by insects.
They don't have road rage.
They don't slam the brakes on slippery surfaces.
You can read a book on your way to work.
You can drive across country without stopping for more than fuel / bathroom breaks.
5 cars can be shared with 20 families or so, dramatically lowering costs.
They can pick up your kids or your groceries without you.
It's quite plausible to make autonomous cars that drive much safer than humans.
Self-driving cars, imo, would be awesome, if they were protected from the state being able to do anything to them ever.
Should they be forced on people? Of course not. Drive if you want. But I would love one for the above reasons.
May as well take the bus.
